Black Lives Matter Statement About Violent Conflict in Ethiopia

Updated: May 4, 2021

Violence in Ethiopia:

The assassination of Hachalu Hundessa, a famous artist in Ethiopia, has been a subject of much speculation and contention. Immediately following the assassination, close to 250 people died and thousands were jailed. Some think that the violence was a brutal government crackdown on protesters grieving Hundessa's death. Others describe the event as targeted attacks by armed youth against ethnic and religious minorities.

Black Lives Matter stands in solidarity with all people in the Horn of Africa who are affected by conflict in Ethiopia. BLM's mission is to fight against state-sanctioned violence against all Black people, which also extends to the global Black community. They are hopeful for the start of a long journey toward peace and reconciliation.
